Arabella Adams was full of hope and optimism when she arrived on the Caribbean island of St. Crescens to take up her first post as governess. But it was 1878, less than fifty years after the British abolished slavery. Dangerous secrets and desires lurked beneath the surface of St. Crescian society. Arabella surrendered to a forbidden love even as the dark clouds of old hatreds and new injustices boiled on the horizon. When those clouds burst over the island, Arabella's hopes and dreams ended and the island was changed forever.

More than a hundred years later, another woman, Grace Hylton, arrives on St. Crescens and takes up residence at Jessamine, the old Great House where Arabella once lived. Ruled by a corrupt political dynasty, St. Crescens is again on the brink of violence and chaos. It falls to Grace to discover the secrets of the past and right an old wrong before the island is plunged into years of turmoil. To succeed, however, she needs Arabella's help.

This is the gripping story of two women from two very different eras who must work together to save the island and the man they both love.

I just finished this book last night, and I already wish I hadn't. I know St. Crescens isn't a real island, but it sure felt real. As a child, I lived in the Caribbean for three years, and as an adult, I've found my way back again and again. At the age of nine, living in Puerto Rico, I looked forward to the regular puddle-jumping seaplane rides over to St. Thomas. I looked forward to that, not only because I loved the people, the beaches, the stores, the neighborhoods, and the smell of the wind, but also because my favorite restaurant was on St. Thomas. It was called Arby's; little did I know it was not one of a kind.

All this to say that reading this book felt like going home. The Caribbean has a pace to it, a smell to it, a rhythm and a cadence to it, and all of this comes across in the book.

Jessamine is a ghost story, but the whole Caribbean is a ghost story - that's an inevitable legacy of strife and torment and desire and tenacity. Jessamine is also a love story, as much about time and place as about actual lovers. And Jessamine is a mystery, compelling and bold.

Eugenia O'Neal has woven a beautiful, aching, thrilling tale, as warm a story as I've read in a long while.

Jessamine edition by Eugenia O'Neal Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

I enjoyed getting lost in Jessamine's past and present. I've always enjoys novels that take me back in time. There is a nice blend of current and past details that bring the story to life.
It was a great quick read as Faye said. I'm convinced I know where the island is -- LOL. I cant wait to read more of her books.
Wonderful story that brought the past and present together in a wonderful way. The descriptions of the island will make you feel you are there in this beautiful tropical setting. This is a ghost story with elements of political conflict, corruption and racism. Well worth reading.
Jessamine is really two stories in one. The two heroines live in different centuries. The author brings each alive by telling about their hopes, dreams, culture and political environment in which each woman lives. As the story progresses we understand how their lives are intertwined. I tried to read the book slowly because I didn't want it to end too soon. However I couldn't resist reading one more chapter before turning off my kindle.
It's rare to find a Carribbean history/mystery that is so compelling and authentic. This one is spot on. The descriptions of island life are believable for both of the characters times and one follows them with anticipation and just a little bit of fear for their well being. I read this book because my cousin read it in three days and called me constantly to get my opinion. I read it in two. I was sad when I finished. I'd become invested in and attached to the two heroines and their Carribbean Island. I highly recommend this book. Two thumbs up Ms O'neal!!!
What a wonderful job Eugenia has done! The characters are so rich and well defined. Her talent for telling the story of two women, past and present and they joining the two together s
eamlessly. TALENT! TALENT! TALENT! I want more! Hated for it to finish. Take a bow Eugenia!
Excellent reading material. Completely read the book in 6 hours, was very hard to put down. Loved how the two centuries were interwined(not sure of this spelling). I really liked how reference was made to other caribbean islands. There are many unsung heros that always go unnoticed or appreciated and they always go out of their way to assist people even when the person is ungrateful. It was a great pleasure meeting Ms. Eugenia and hope to see you soon. God bless.
